My path towards becoming a psychologist is anything but direct.
~Johan Halland, Registered Psychologist

The Attraction to Psychology
Growing up in a small town in central Alberta meant spending time outdoors with friends and family and generally doing anything that would keep me out of the classroom. Having an older sister who decided to venture off to post-secondary education motivated me. I was faced with a decision of whether to enter the workforce, or further my education. I chose to attend College in Red Deer and then University of Calgary. Transitions and adjustments have always been a part of my life. During this journey, I discovered I ultimately have a soft spot when it comes to people experiencing adjustments, transitions, and loss.
Commitment to Continuous Learning
Ongoing professional development and continued learning is at the core of my practice. In fact, it is common for me to hear comments such as “are you ever going to be done schooling”?
I find enjoyment in my constant learning. I can recall an early seminar in Sandtray Therapy - I laughed to myself as I thought about the potential of playing in sand and this making a positive difference. I recognize that the science of psychology is also an art, and I attempt to blend these two to create optimal conditions for therapeutic success. This has led me to my most recent venture, obtaining a Doctorate in Psychology.
A Career of Diverse Experiences
I was fortunate to land a job after graduating from my undergraduate degree, which is not always the case for new grads. This represented a time of uncertainty surrounding what sorts of path my life might take. Fortunately, I had several amazing mentors, including one particular psychologist who gently nudged me to apply to graduate school. I will forever remember this statement: “You can always say no!”. Graduate school started and ended in a blink of an eye, probably to the relief of family and friends. Ultimately, I decided it was time to leave the big city of Calgary and return to my roots in Central Alberta.
My Ideal Client
I have found my passion in working with clients experiencing phase of life problems, adjustments, transitions, and loss. I enjoy providing various assessments and counselling services for children, youth, and adults. I strive to provide guidance and mentorship to clients in the same way I have been mentored and guided.
Life Beyond Therapy
When I am not working or plugging away at my doctorate, I am attempting to soak in what Alberta has to offer. I also thoroughly enjoy a warm beach and the occasional round of golf. My elusive but finally attained Ace (hole in one) reinforced in me that persistence and dedication does pay-off! This is another aspect of my practice that I attempt to instill in my clients. It’s a privilege to work closely with kids, adults, and families as they navigate their lives and work towards greater wellbeing.
