My Journey as a Provisional Psychologist
~ Amber Chamberlain

The Attraction to Psychology
I have always been curious about the human mind and how people interact with one another. However, what initially attracted me to becoming a psychologist was my profound desire to help people work through their difficulties and lead satisfying lives. There's something incredibly fulfilling about supporting others as they navigate their challenges and uncover their strengths. I have also been in therapy myself over the years and understand firsthand how powerful and transformative the experience can be. This personal connection to therapy fuels my passion and dedication to my clients.
Commitment to Continuous Learning
My dedication to helping others is matched only by my passion for learning. I am committed to keeping up with the latest research through constant reading and training. This ensures that my approaches are evidence-based and that I provide my clients with the best care. Staying informed about new developments in psychology enhances my professional growth and significantly benefits those I work with.
My Ideal Client
My ideal client is ready to explore the patterns and themes in their life and make active changes towards new ways of coping, meeting their goals, and connecting to their values. Whether it’s an individual exploring their inner world, a couple seeking to strengthen their relationship, or a group working to develop emotion regulation skills, I am committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for growth and healing.
A Career of Diverse Experiences
Before fully committing to therapy, I spent twelve years as a behaviour consultant. This role allowed me to work closely with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and I quickly noticed significant gaps in how they were supported with their mental health. This realization was a turning point for me, prompting my decision to make the leap into providing therapy. I wanted to be part of the solution, offering more comprehensive and compassionate care to those in need.
Life Beyond Therapy
When I am not in the therapy room, you can often find me curled up with my cats, enjoying a good book. Reading has always been a beloved pastime, offering me both relaxation and a continued source of learning. My love for physical activity keeps me engaged in various pursuits, from working out at the gym to practicing yoga. These activities help me balance life, ensuring that I am mentally and physically healthy.
Gardening and spending time outdoors are other passions that bring me immense joy. Connecting with nature allows me to recharge and find peace amidst the busyness of life. Whether tending to my garden or exploring new trails with my husband, these moments of tranquillity are essential to my well-being.
Conclusion
Being a psychologist is more than just a profession for me; it’s a calling. It’s about making a difference in the lives of others and witnessing the incredible resilience of the human spirit. Each day, I am reminded of the importance of empathy, understanding, and support. It is an honour to be part of my client's journeys, and I am continually inspired by their courage and determination.
As I continue to grow and evolve in my practice, I remain dedicated to creating a space where individuals, couples, and groups can feel heard, valued, and empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives. This journey is one of continuous learning, compassion, and connection, and I am grateful for every moment.
