My Journey as a Counselling Therapist

~Trevor Pikkert

Trevor, Counselling Therpaist

The Attraction to Psychology

I have always loved a challenge. Overcoming adversity or finding a way through a plateau requires seeking support from trained practitioners using scientifically proven methods for success. I have been involved in athletics my entire life, as a player and now as a coach, with a focus on Mental Training. I discovered that we don't need to seek support only when we are struggling or stuck. We can seek help when we are doing well and want to continue growing and challenging ourselves.

A Career of Diverse Experiences

I have spent 25 years in Education. I was a high school counsellor and Learning Assistance Teacher for 8 years before moving to administration as my life long learning journey. Within this role, I focused on wellness and our use of technology. From here, I was shifted to our district Valuing Mental Health Coordinator role where I could impact the Wellness goals of our district of over 10,000 students and 1200 employees.

I have also spent twenty-five years as a coach, working closely with athletes and sports teams. This role allowed me to notice significant gaps in how mental health was supported in athletics. This realization was a turning point for me, prompting my decision to make the leap into providing therapy. I wanted to be part of the solution, offering more comprehensive and compassionate care to those in need. My experience in athletics as both a player and coach has shaped my approach to coaching and counseling. I believe in the power of mental training and am dedicated to helping my clients overcome challenges and reach their full potential.

My Ideal Client

Teens and adults. Whether you're dealing with aggression, anxiety, depression, or relationship stuff, I've got your back. I'm all about helping you grow and feel better. I'm also super passionate about working with athletes, both teams and individuals, to boost their mental game. Sports psychology can make a huge difference in how you perform, and I'm here to help you get the edge.

My Counseling Philosophy

From the beginning of my career as a counsellor, I have been driven by the idea of putting the client first. Every individual is unique, with their own experiences, struggles, strengths, and hopes. I focus on listening, understanding, and tailoring my approach to meet the individual needs of those I work with. This builds a trusting and collaborative relationship, where the client feels heard, respected, and empowered in a safe environment. Life can be great and life also has its challenges. I aim to support and help individuals not by avoiding or numbing the uncomfortable, but rather learning to live with discomfort and working through our feelings and emotions. I aid clients by enabling them to embrace their experiences, cultivate situational awareness, and take committed action towards living a life that aligns with their values.

Life Beyond Therapy

I love my time at the lake with my family. We love to spend time outdoors no matter the season. In the summer, we will spend time in the water kayaking, swimming, or paddle boarding. Some days suggest that we just relax on the beach or play beach volleyball or just throw a Frisbee or ball around. In the colder months, we will skate or cross country ski on the vast frozen waters. We love to disconnect and read, bike, walk, or if the day requires, puzzle or play board games together with the family.  I am also an avid golfer as I love the challenge of this difficult game.

Conclusion

The game of Life has ups and downs, wins and losses. Don’t wait - Let’s embark on this journey of mental wellness and peak performance and let’s tackle it together.

I look forward to meeting and the opportunity to work with you.
